For three days in June, Drake University’s Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication teamed up with the Poynter Institute and the McCormick Foundation to welcome 23 journalists to campus for a Specialized Reporting Institute. Journalists heard from prominent Iowans and national media personalities with extensive experience covering the Iowa caucus campaign to learn more about how to cover the candidates, the campaign, the state, and the people of Iowa.
Presenters included: Jeff Zeleny (CNN), Don Gonyea (NPR), Sasha Issenberg (Bloomberg), Laura McGann (Vox), Mike Tackett (New York Times), and Ann Selzer (Des Moines Register).
The workshop included trivia night (co-sponsored by the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Iowa Public Radio) at the Des Moines Social Club on June 21. Following Monday’s sessions, participants witnessed a mock caucus organized by the Polk County Republicans and the Polk County Democrats. After another day of panels, workshop attendees visited Perry Iowa on Tuesday night.
