Tom Steyer

A native of New York City, Tom Steyer was born on June 27, 1957. He earned a B.A. in economics and political science at Yale University and went on to earn an M.B.A. from Stanford University. In between his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Steyer worked in investments at Morgan Stanley. After Stanford, he worked at various investment firms before founding his own, Farallon Capital, in 1986. In 2012, he left Farallon to support environmental advocacy efforts and Democratic Party politics. The next year, Steyer founded NextGen Climate (now NextGen America), an environmental advocacy group that has spent millions of dollars to advance progressive candidates and environmental activism. In 2017, he founded Need to Impeach, an organization that advocates for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Steyer and his wife Kathryn live in California and have four children.

Tom Steyer announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination on July 9, 2019.
