Pete Buttigieg
A native of South Bend, Indiana, Peter “Pete” Buttigieg was born on January 19, 1982. He attended Harvard University, graduating with a B.A. in history and literature in 2004. Upon graduation, Buttigieg was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and attended the University of Oxford where he completed a M.A. in philosophy, politics, and economics. In 2009, he became an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and then deployed to Afghanistan in 2014. In 2010, Buttigieg unsuccessfully ran for state treasurer of Indiana. In 2012, he became Mayor of South Bend, Indiana and won re-election in 2015, serving until 2020. In 2017, he unsuccessfully ran for Chair of the Democratic National Committee. He is married to his husband Chasten with whom he lives in South Bend, Indiana.
Pete Buttigieg announced on January 23, 2019 that he was forming an exploratory committee and then formally declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination on April 14, 2019.
