Born in Secane, Pennsylvania on December 12, 1951, Joseph “Joe” Sestak attended the U.S. Naval Academy, earning a degree in American political systems. In 1974, Sestak became an officer in the U.S. Navy and earned an M.P.A. and a Ph.D. in political economy between tours from Harvard University. Sestak retired as a Rear Admiral in 2005. In 2006, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Seventh Congressional District of Pennsylvania and was re-elected in 2008. In 2010 and 2016, he unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania and has worked as a professor since holding elected office. He is currently married to his wife Susan; the couple has one daughter.
