Bernie Sanders
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 8, 1941. He attended The University of Chicago and earned a B.A. in political science in 1964. Returning to the United States after time in Israel, he moved to Vermont and worked as a carpenter, filmmaker, and writer. In 1981, he was elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Sanders was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Vermont’s At-Large Congressional District in 1990 and served for 16 years before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 2006 (he was reelected in 2012 and 2018). In 2016, Sanders launched an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for president coming in second place behind Hillary Clinton. He and his wife Jane live in Vermont and have four children.
