Candidates Tailgate for President

A part of the purpose of this blog is to show what makes Iowa different and important in presidential campaigns, especially before the Iowa caucuses. One of those key differences is the length Iowans make candidates go to in order to secure their votes. Candidates chow down on pork on a stick at the Iowa State Fair in scorching heat and this football season they tailgated at two state universities. Earlier in September GOP candidates Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz traveled to Ames to join in the revelry prior to the in-state rivalry game between Iowa and Iowa State. All four candidates attended a tailgate hosted by the Republican Party of Iowa, Boone and Story County Republicans, and Iowa State and Iowa College Republicans. Kevin Trahan of SBNation wrote an article on the tailgate that is both informative and comical.

Carly_Fiorina_by_Gage_SkidmoreOn Saturday Carly Fiorina took to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Fiorina’s experience was not quite as peaceful. A group a Planned Parenthood protestors crashed Fiorina’s tailgate. Shouting, “I-O-W-A, women’s rights are here to stay,” the protestors stood just a few feet from Fiorina, who appeared undisturbed by them. Fiorina remarked that she must have done something right since the protestors can only shout propaganda and not discuss the facts.

The Planned Parenthood group was protesting remarks Fiorina made during the Republican debate earlier this month Fiorina said, “Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.” The video clips Fiorina referred to do not appear in the Planned Parenthood tapes, however, she has yet to back down about her remarks.
